Well, after a really long time not updating this site I decided to give the whole website thing another go. The theme I used before was pretty outdated and I've upgraded to RapidWeaver 7 which didn't like it at all anyway so I've switched to a new stock theme for now. I plan on doing a significant amount of reorganization
Just a quick post for anyone who has ever read this site :) I was doing some work in a not all that internet connected continent there for a while but am back home now and thinking about things to write about. My previous synology photo uploader hasn't seen any real development for a while I've noticed that Synology has a new uploader of their own now but haven't had a chance to benchmark it to see if they learned anything from my explanation as to why their old one was so slow. I have a mass of photos I need to master which certainly hasn't been happening fast and have taken up tinkering with Arduinos. I've also given some thought to renaming the site. RagingSloth seemed like a good enough name when my original intention was to write some simple Facebook games back in the early days of FarmVille but I never really found anyone to partner up and take over the art duties now I'm thinking it might not come off all that professional on a resume (I'm applying to do a part time MASc so while I'm fully employed I have had to write a resume :) ) Anyway if anyone is still out there reading I'd be interested to know if anyone is waiting for more writing on anything I currently have up on the site or perhaps some suggested new site names :)
Figured I'd give a quick update in case anyone is reading out there :) My move has been a lot more work than I expected not only the level of renovations I tried to take on but it would appear the house came with some mice... Anyway I have very few mice left but also learned I'll be leaving home for an extended period in the Spring for work to somewhere where I'm unlikely to have any internet access. So while the site isn't dead I'm unlikely to make any progress on any of my projects on here for the next year or so...
If anyone is following the uploader development they probably noticed it has stalled. There is a minor connection issue with the Uploader which I've been unable to diagnose due to my physically moving and my NAS not being setup. I've had it reported to me but I've only seen it while using the uploader from outside of my LAN. Right now the uploader uses multiple upload processes but this leads to almost no gain as while more than one upload will be accepted by the NAS the overall throughput it will accept seems to be constant (so if you have 4 processes each will run at 25% speed). I'm going to switch back to a single connection for the uploads which should help me isolate the problem and add an exception handler that will naively close and reopen the connection when something goes wrong (a certain number of times before failing) and log information on the exception encountered to help me eventually put in a more graceful fix. Of course my NAS is sitting on a chair in my living room and my possessions are still very thrown about. So if anyone would like a copy of the uploader let me know and I'll get you a copy of the beta as it is and the patched version should be coming in the next few weeks.
Some bugs have been fixed and some functionality added but the uploader isn't quite ready for prime time yet. My recent attempts to buy a house failed and I'm starting over so there won't be much progress for the next couple of weeks. As always if anyone is doing a huge upload and would like to try as is let me know in the comments.
