We actually didn't make it to the semi-finals which was a rather major upset after being 2nd place most of the year. Such is life though I suppose. Hopefully I'll find some time tomorrow to get some useful stuff up for my NAS article. As I said I would I contacted Synology and asked about the protocol for uploading thumbnails to try and make a nice neatly packaged uploader for everyone. He responded that he'd forward my request to the developers but I haven't heard anything since then. It would be pretty sweet if they hooked me up :). If not I can still make the process much faster than it is but it will be more of a hassle (you'll have to make changes to the Synology assistant files as well as run a script to generate the thumbnails separate from the assistant to upload them.)

Update to NAS article. Basically I find it cavepersonish to not have access to my entire photo library from wherever I am over the internet and I don't want to pay a monthly fee to use someone else's cloud space. So that leaves the reasonably full featured Photo Station in my DS212j NAS. Of course as anyone who owns a Synology NAS knows it takes forever to get photos up on the damn thing as the process of generating thumbnails is ridiculous. Even with the Synology Assistant program large uploads (like the first time you put your library up) take an excruciating amount of time. For two systems one running two instances of the Synology Assistant (to try and make use of the second core) it took more than a full day to transfer 3455 files. I've tried quite a few things and now I have some scripts that have significantly shortened that timeframe. I'm not totally sure how long in total but it seems like the same library is going now at around 3-5 hours (it's still running and I'm not totally sure when I started the process) Also the thumbnails I'm generating are significantly smaller than those automatically made by the NAS. I'm going to put my scripts up and do a quick article on what I did and why, but right now I need to go to bed.

This site isn't dead :)

<dc:subject>Raging Sloth Home</dc:subject>

I know I said I'd be doing a review of Aperture and I still might but it just didn't do it for me enough to even get into the guts of it. Aperture is much more powerful for dealing with RAW files but it is terrible at dealing with non-RAW files. As a non-pro who wants to have copies of all his photos everywhere he goes I prefer to keep my RAW files in regular folders, convert them with DXO and store the jpegs in iPhoto '11. I like the Facebook integration in iPhoto for showing things to my family quickly and with jpegs browsing is super quick. So if I'm looking for a photo I can find it in iPhoto, then potentially reprocess the RAW to get a better result when I'm actually using the file instead of spending tonnes of time on post processing just after I've taken some photos (which I never do). That means I get nice Consumer photo browsing which is what I use most and I can dig in to creating high quality stuff when I need to. I've also recently purchased a DS212j Network Attached Storage device so I'll be able to get to my RAW images from anywhere with internet access (Of course I'll know exactly which one I want because it will match up to my iPhoto jpeg filename so I'll only have to download the RAWs I want and not browse slowly). More on the NAS in my next post I'm about to type (but I want to keep separate).

SOPA/PIPA Blackout

<dc:subject>Raging Sloth Home</dc:subject>

If anyone reading this tried to use the site today they probably noticed that the server didn't respond. Definitely an improvement over previous prints but nowhere near as bright as my soft proofing would have me expect. One thing that I've noticed with each MPIX print is that some of the colours that were a little washed out in the photo are much more vivid. My particular photo involves a tiger cub in the sun and the brighter parts of his/her back are kind of a washed out orange which MPIX seems to correct however the background is much darker than when I soft proof. MPIX does have a guarantee that I might look into but even what I have is significantly better than the Apple prints. I can't believe I got sick again basically right after I got over my last one but I think it may have had something to do with a lot of alcohol and being out in freezing weather on New Years.

In addition to writing another script I've also ordered some photo prints and as such have come to realize that having set my XSi to use Adobe RGB for whatever reason a while ago was a bad idea (to be honest I'd totally forgotten). At first I was taking mostly RAW shots but the file management was annoying given the significantly larger file sizes and the extra time it takes for programs to be able to display them. Now that I switched back to jpegs I didn't even think about the camera colour profile.

I was going to compare my apple prints to some I got from MPIX but I realized that I'd mistakenly sent Adobe RGB to MPix which requests everything in sRGB. Apple doesn't actually say anything anywhere about colour profiles when ordering prints through iPhoto and the MPix results were still better (for the specific shots I ordered,) but before I put up any comparisons I want to see what MPix comes back with when I actually provide them with what I was supposed to :) I also did some soft proofing with the MPix provided colour profiles which may seem unfair, but Apple doesn't provide colour profiles or even claim any sort of consistency between prints anyway... The general impression I got was that Apple prints are cheaper and are probably suitable for most of the prints a person might want to do, however the prints I ordered came back significantly darker than they look on my colour calibrated IPS monitor and a lot of detail was lost. Mpix of course was also dark but this makes sense when you realize the way Adobe RGB works compared to sRGB and in using the Mpix colour profiles I've lightened some of the shadowed areas to work better with their printers (which I can't reliably do when ordering from Apple). More to follow on that one.

Oh and the new Apple App Store has Aperture 3 for significantly less than the retail version. There are things I definitely like better about Aperture vs iPhoto 11, but also things that I like better about iPhoto 11 than aperture... I might get a copy and keep a separate aperture library of all my photos on an external HDD while keeping iphoto on my laptop and using it for showing people photos while I'm away and any sharing I do with them. I'm also thinking I might switch my xsi back to RAW and maintain a RAW library on aperture and jpeg conversions in iphoto to reduce the use of my laptop's relatively small drive (256GB, because it is an SSD).

Site Menu Reorganization

<dc:subject>Raging Sloth Home</dc:subject>

As I have a few more things I plan on writing as follow ons to my png optimizer scripts, I've decided to reorganize them under an index page and free up space in the sidebar menu under software engineering. Never fear however because I've finally started working on my parallel version of my pngoptimizer. Now unfortunately google analytics tells me that the vast majority of my traffic is people who have come here for the articles I've written on my S95 and particularly my experiences with the HDR feature. I'm assuming that these people have little to no interest in my python tutorials but I do think they may be interested in the finished product. I'm going to go through the steps of making the optimizer work with png images and then expand it to also run jpegrescan on jpeg images (all the heavy lifting is done by the programs it calls anyway). So if you're a photographer or aspiring photographer you may be interested as running jpegrescan on your pictures is a pretty good way of shrinking them down just a little without losing detail and potentially posting them on a website (be forewarned that it will remove your copyright data however to make the file even smaller and I've noticed that photoshop can no longer properly display the graphics either, though every other program I've used does just fine). Anyway eventually these python tutorials will culminate in a user friendly gui application that you can use to run commands on filetypes recursively in a directory. So for example you could have an html shrinking program, a png optimizing program, a jpeg optimizing program, configure this app to run them and let it loose in a web directory to optimize all the files held within.

Anyway after a lot of deliberation I've decided to use the python multiprocessing module rather than my initial plan to use sockets and fork, I'm still undecided as to the gui toolkit to use but that will come later anyway.

PS: if anyone has any requests for articles please leave them in the comments.

New pictures finally up

<dc:subject>Raging Sloth Home</dc:subject>

I've finally gotten around to adding comparison pictures from the Grand Canyon to my in-camera HDR article. I'm typing this while downing spaghetti before going to bed at 8pm. Such is the life sometimes in my chosen profession. Anyway I thought I'd blog some quick points about my S95 HDR pics of the Grand Canyon that are coming.

While I am a fan of the in-camera HDR feature I've had my first disappointments with some shots. The setting works well for quick HDR like I've said before, but does a poor job when there are extreme lighting differences, at least with the source material at the Grand Canyon. Some of the mountains look terrible in the background. I haven't tried to fix tis yet with photoshop but it is at the least an annoying extra task and more work than auto-bracketing.

The auto-bracketing shots I took worked out well, with my mini tripod and setting a delay before shooting. One set of 3 images had to be corrected by only one pixel in one of the images. Without the delay setting significantly more adjustment was required but FDR Tools was able to set things up without noticeable ghosting.

Photoshop Elements did a pretty bad job of combining the photos prompting me to buy the full version of FDR Tools which is very impressive.

I still like the in-camera feature and defend it against the criticisms I've read on other sites. After all, FDR Tools running on my MacBook Pro (2.5GHz dual core) takes almost a minute to generate an HDR image while my camera running on a battery and fitting in my hand does it in approximately 7 seconds. Just keep in mind that the feature is only meant for certain applications and scenes (and skill levels).

So the future article will elaborate on these points and give some photos to back things up.

On another point I'm going to be playing around with mod_pagespeed in a virtual machine and figuring out why it screwed up my site formatting so eventually I'll have something out on that. If you want to know when it comes out the RSS feed is the best way to go.

As for me I've got 43 minutes till bed...

mod_pagespeed

<dc:subject>Raging Sloth Home</dc:subject>

So I ran into an article on mod_pagespeed from google and decided to install it on my server.
