Well here we are

Figured I'd give a quick update in case anyone is reading out there :) My move has been a lot more work than I expected not only the level of renovations I tried to take on but it would appear the house came with some mice... Anyway I have very few mice left but also learned I'll be leaving home for an extended period in the Spring for work to somewhere where I'm unlikely to have any internet access. So while the site isn't dead I'm unlikely to make any progress on any of my projects on here for the next year or so...

Update

If anyone is following the uploader development they probably noticed it has stalled. There is a minor connection issue with the Uploader which I've been unable to diagnose due to my physically moving and my NAS not being setup. I've had it reported to me but I've only seen it while using the uploader from outside of my LAN. Right now the uploader uses multiple upload processes but this leads to almost no gain as while more than one upload will be accepted by the NAS the overall throughput it will accept seems to be constant (so if you have 4 processes each will run at 25% speed). I'm going to switch back to a single connection for the uploads which should help me isolate the problem and add an exception handler that will naively close and reopen the connection when something goes wrong (a certain number of times before failing) and log information on the exception encountered to help me eventually put in a more graceful fix. Of course my NAS is sitting on a chair in my living room and my possessions are still very thrown about. So if anyone would like a copy of the uploader let me know and I'll get you a copy of the beta as it is and the patched version should be coming in the next few weeks.

Beta testing is ongoing. House search starting from scratch...

Some bugs have been fixed and some functionality added but the uploader isn't quite ready for prime time yet. My recent attempts to buy a house failed and I'm starting over so there won't be much progress for the next couple of weeks. As always if anyone is doing a huge upload and would like to try as is let me know in the comments.

House is a mess but Beta almost here

So my house purchase is a mess right now. The owners didn't mention a few expensive safety related defects during the price negotiation and now they don't want to bother fixing them.

On the Beta front however I've switched to using pgmagick (an interface for GraphicsMagick) instead of PIL and everything is working. The colour related issues I saw with PIL are gone though for some reason the thumbnails don't seem as sharp. I think the convert utility is using resizing algorithms that aren't available through pgmagick as it only connects the C++ interface and not the C one. It is also possible that unsharp mask isn't working correctly (or perhaps at all). The speed difference is still there though I haven't done any large scale comparisons yet to confirm it is exactly the same I know that CPU utilization is minimal so I'm still bound by the upload process. I run unsharp mask with the same options that the Synology uploader does and I've even added in regular sharpening but it doesn't seem to be doing much. In the end though the colours are correct this time and I think I've reached the point of good enough. Anyway I've spent far too much time on this tonight so I'll try to clean it up and get it out to my volunteer testers tomorrow.

You know what makes it hard to concentrate on programming?

Negotiating the purchase of a house :) I'll try to get the Beta finalized soon though and hopefully have bought a house too.
